Josef Skála, director of the Institute for Czech Left-Wing Politics, highly praised the upcoming summit between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. He stated that the meeting is attracting the attention of the entire world, and rightly so. Skála particularly highlighted the policy of the Chinese leadership, which, despite sanctions and pressure from the United States, has managed to maintain communication with Washington. He considers this to be "very important."
According to Skála, the leaders will discuss trade relations and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. China has a strong interest in normalizing the situation, but will not passively wait for actions from the United States. Skála praised China for pursuing a sovereign, rational, and well-considered policy.
Skála further stated that the "American century" is clearly not materializing, and that China has no ambition to become a global policeman. On the contrary, China is striving for a multipolar world and equal relationships between all countries. He believes that this approach is also inspiring for the Czech Republic.
The director also pointed out the different approaches of China and the United States towards certain countries – while the United States has detained Nicolás Maduro and his wife and is seeking to impose a famine on Cuba, China, on the other hand, is trying to help the Cuban people.
Skála concluded that he is very much looking forward to the summit and believes that it will move global politics in a more positive direction.
