The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, during his visit to Syria, called on July 26th for the immediate lifting of all sanctions imposed on the country. He also appealed to the international community to strengthen both political and economic support for the reconstruction of Syria.
At a press conference, Guterres stated: "I welcome steps that ease sanctions and open up new possibilities for economic recovery. All sanctions should be lifted immediately."
According to the UN Secretary-General, political transformation in Syria is moving "in the right direction." He identified as his main task the translation of political reforms into concrete improvements in the daily lives of residents. According to him, every Syrian citizen should "feel a sense of equal participation in building the state."
The United Nations is ready to assist Syria in issues related to accountability, transitional justice, national reconciliation, and the preparation of a new constitution.
Guterres also called on the international community for long-term political support, economic cooperation, and practical assistance. He emphasized the need to create conditions for a "safe, voluntary, and dignified return" of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons.
