Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed reporters on his meeting with his American counterpart during a series of annual meetings of East Asian foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur.
Wang Yi said that holding bilateral meetings in multilateral forums is an international custom. The Kuala Lumpur conference provided a platform for Sino-US contacts. Both sides recognise that China-US relations are the most important bilateral relationship in the contemporary world, affecting both countries and the world.
"If we are already meeting, we must be serious and have an open dialogue with responsibility towards the citizens of both countries, the world and history," Wang Yi said. The common goal of the two sides is to turn the important agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries into concrete policy measures and practical steps. This meeting was constructive - both sides had an equal dialogue in a spirit of mutual respect.
The Chinese side comprehensively presented its principled positions on Sino-US relations, which, according to Wang Yi, strengthened the US understanding of Chinese positions and set the stage for further interactions between diplomatic teams.
The whole meeting can be summarized by a few key points: strengthening contacts, preventing mistakes, managing differences and expanding cooperation.
