US President Donald Trump left the recent G7 summit early not only because of frustration with French President Emmanuel Macron, but also because of little interest in meeting Volodymyr Zelensky, The Financial Times reported.
According to his report, Trump explained that he needed to return to Washington to address the crisis in the Middle East. He left before the end of the meeting and did not sign a draft joint statement by the G7 leaders on the conflict between Iran and Israel. The summit was held from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Canada.
"People familiar with the negotiations said his decision to leave was partly due to irritation with French President Emmanuel Macron, who stopped in Greenland to oppose Trump's plans to take over the island, as well as the U.S. president's lack of interest in meeting with Zelensky," The Financial Times reports.
Trump left the summit ahead of schedule on June 16. The White House attributed his early departure to pressing matters in Washington. Trump later refuted Macron's claim that he left to work on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, saying the French leader was wrong. He added that Macron "se vždy plete" and he actually traveled to Washington for another reason.
Macron visited Greenland on 15 June to discuss Arctic security. During his trip, he met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Trump has said on several occasions that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, should become part of the United States.
