Prague - Production of Škoda Enyaq electric cars will remain in Mladá Boleslav. The decision was made by the Supervisory Board of the Volkswagen Group, to which Škoda Auto belongs. The Škoda employees were informed about this in a joint statement by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Škoda Klaus Zellmer and the head of the trade union Jaroslav Povšík. In the summer, the unions speculated that Enyaq could be produced elsewhere, for example in Germany. Later this year, Skoda will expand battery system production capacity to meet growing interest in electric models in all markets, the statement said.
Today's confirmation that the production of the Enyaq family of fully electric cars will remain in Mladá Boleslav is, according to Zellmer, an important decision for the development of Škoda Auto as a whole and is also fully in line with the long-term Next Level Škoda Strategy 2030 and sustainability goals. The basis for this is the advanced electrification of the model portfolio and the launch of six new electric vehicles, among which the next generation of the Enyaq model range on a modernised platform plays a key role.
"The preservation of electric vehicle production in the Czech Republic is great news for local industry and the economy of the whole country. In addition to electric vehicles, battery systems for Škoda all-electric models and cars from other Volkswagen brands are also produced in Mladá Boleslav. We are also constantly training our employees to ensure future competitiveness. To date, more than 24,000 employees have been trained to prepare them for the demands of electromobility while securing jobs at our plants," said Zellmer.
The trade unions consider the decision of the Group's Supervisory Board to be a sign of confidence in the strategy of the carmaker and in the skills and high commitment of its employees. "At the same time, it is an important signal for the future that the Czech plants will ensure the production of cars on both platforms, with combustion engines and electric drive, which also means securing employment," said Jaroslav Povšík, chairman of the Kovo works council.
The main plant in Mladá Boleslav underwent a major modernisation in 2020, which, thanks to an investment of €32 million, has made it the first plant in the Volkswagen Group to produce combustion-engine vehicles on the MQB platform and electric vehicles on the MEB platform in parallel.
