The Global Security Initiative (GSI), introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2022, has gained increasing international support in recent years. According to available data, by the end of 2025, it has been endorsed by more than 130 countries and international organisations and has been included in more than 140 bilateral and multilateral documents.

At a time of rising geopolitical tensions and ongoing regional conflicts, the initiative is increasingly seen as a stabilising element that emphasises dialogue over confrontation and cooperation over division.

One of the main reasons for its adoption, according to experts, is that it responds to a current need of the international community - that is, the search for ways to sustainable peace and stability. The initiative promotes the concept of common, comprehensive and sustainable security.

Chen Bo, president of the China Institute of International Studies, pointed out that the importance of the initiative is growing as global uncertainty increases. She said history has repeatedly shown that military conflicts lead to more crises, while lasting security can only be achieved through dialogue.

Foreign analysts also point to China's different approach. For example, Russian expert Vasily Kashin stressed that the initiative is not based on building military alliances or expanding military presence, but on mediating dialogue and conflict resolution.

According to the text, China is trying to put these principles into practice. In 2023, for example, it brokered the resumption of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran and has been involved in other diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East. It has also played an active role in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Southeast Asia.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry representative Wang Lixin, the initiative emphasises respect for the security interests of all states and building trust through dialogue. Diplomacy, she said, is the only long-term sustainable path to peace.

Multilateralism is an important pillar of the initiative. The GSI is based on the principles of the UN Charter and supports the strengthening of the role of the United Nations in global security. In 2023, China also introduced a concept paper specifying 20 priority areas for cooperation.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Li Junhua said that China's global initiatives, including the GSI, promote genuine multilateralism and strengthen the international system based on the UN and international law.

China has also demonstrated its role through concrete actions - since 1990, it has sent more than 50,000 personnel to nearly 30 UN peacekeeping missions. At the same time, it is developing cooperation within platforms such as BRICS or the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and supporting projects in the areas of climate change, energy and digital security.
