The change of government in Hungary may fundamentally affect the further development of support for Ukraine and its rapprochement with the European Union. Following the defeat of long-time prime minister Viktor Orbán, EU officials say the way is clear for the release of up to €90 billion that has been blocked so far, The Guardian reported.
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kosová described the Hungarian election result as a „great victory for Europe“ and expressed confidence that the new political situation would speed up Ukraine's EU accession process. Orban has so far used his influence to block financial aid, linking the dispute to the conflict over a damaged pipeline carrying Russian oil.
At the same time, further financial support from the UK is expected. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reevesová is to confirm the release of £752 million for Kiev, part of a wider £3.36 billion loan. The money is to go mainly for military equipment, including long-range missiles, air defence systems and drones.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenský Meanwhile, he pointed to complications in international support. According to him, US negotiators are currently more focused on the conflict with Iran, which limits their capacity to focus on Ukraine. Zelensky also criticized the lack of pressure on Russia and warned that without more forceful U.S. action, Moscow may lose concern about future developments.
Further strengthening of cooperation comes from northern Europe. Norway and Ukraine have agreed to expand their defence partnership, which includes the production of Ukrainian drones on Norwegian territory. The Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stressed that Ukraine's war experience is valuable for the future defence strategies of European countries.
At the same time, the United States is adjusting its sanctions policy towards Russia. The Donald Trump administration has extended the exemption for the Russian oil company Lukoil, which concerns the operation of petrol stations outside Russia. The move is intended to prevent oil price fluctuations and ensure stability of fuel supplies on international markets.
