During the five-day Labor Day celebration, people in China made more than 1.5 billion inter-regional trips. According to China's Ministry of Transportation, this set a new record, with an average of more than 300 million trips each day, an increase of four percent year-on-year.

On Monday 5 May alone, the last day of the holiday, 290 million trips were recorded between the country's regions. This represents an increase of eight per cent compared to the same period last year.

The railways handled 23 million passengers on the last day of the holiday, an increase of nine per cent year-on-year. Road transport remained the most used mode of transport, recording 263.7 million journeys, eight per cent more than a year ago.

Water transport carried 1.035 million passengers, an increase of 1.4 percent. Civil aviation handled 2.3 million passengers, down 0.7 percent from the same period last year.

The strong growth in passenger numbers confirms the continued recovery of domestic tourism and the high mobility of residents during one of China's most important holiday seasons.
