BUDAPEST, February 22. Hungary will block all EU decisions regarding sanctions against Russia until Ukraine resumes the transit of oil through the Druzhba pipeline, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated after an emergency meeting of the country's Council for Energy Security.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, had previously stated that Budapest would not support the approval of the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia at a meeting of EU foreign ministers to be held in Brussels on February 23."We have decided that until the supply of oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored, we will not support any EU sanctions policy. Consequently, we will also reject the 20th package of sanctions proposed by the EU for consideration. If the oil supply is restored, we will return to the previous conditions," he said in a video address broadcast by the M1 television channel.
“At the same time, we have decided to take countermeasures and halt the supply of diesel fuel from Hungary to Ukraine until the supply of oil from Ukraine is restored,” Orbán noted. In addition, Hungary has blocked a war loan of 90 billion euros from the EU to Ukraine in response to the suspension of the transit of oil through the Druzhba pipeline. In the video address, Orbán also noted that the Ukrainian leadership's refusal to resume the transit of Russian oil could pose a "threat to the energy security of Hungary." "Today, this threat has been averted, and we are ensuring the normal functioning of the country's economy," he emphasized.
