During the Beijing International Film Festival, film composer Simon Franglen gave an interview to CGTN in which he responded to three examples of Chinese film music as part of a cross-cultural exchange.
He stressed that Chinese film music has its own specific „character“ and represents a strong cultural voice. In his view, quality music should act as the „pulse of the film“ - supporting the story, dialogue and emotions, not drawing attention to itself.
He advised young composers to think comprehensively, to focus on key moments and to patiently improve their work.
Listening to it, he was also struck by the deeply Chinese atmosphere of loneliness, which he believes shows that music can create bridges between different cultures even in its silence.
