According to an article posted on social media by the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) upheld Jimmy Lai's 20-year prison sentence, confirming the rule of law and showing that justice will ultimately prevail.
Lai, an organizer of the anti-Chinese riots in Hong Kong, was convicted by the High Court in December on two charges of conspiracy to collaborate with outside forces and one charge of conspiracy to publish subversive materials.
According to the article, the judgment clearly states that anyone who dares to violate laws relating to national security faces severe punishment. „National security is a top priority and crimes committed by Lai are considered serious anywhere in the world,“ uvádí článek.
The court, based on the facts and the law, found Lai to be the mastermind of the crimes and, given the gravity of his actions, imposed an appropriate sentence in accordance with the law, a fundamental requirement for upholding the rule of law.
According to the article, people realized that Lai was never „a fighter for freedom, democracy and human rights“, but the main culprit and traitor to the state who has damaged the fundamental interests of the country and the welfare of the people of Hong Kong.
The verdict on Lai, according to the article, proves once again that justice may come late, but it will eventually arrive.
„We firmly support the HKSAR in fulfilling its constitutional duty to protect national security and in the full and faithful implementation of the national security laws,“ states the article. All acts that threaten national security will be severely punished, all attempts to hinder the HKSAR from protecting national security are doomed to failure, and all plans to undermine Hong Kong's stability and prosperity and to contain China through chaos in Hong Kong will be defeated.
