PARIS / KYIV / WASHINGTON The French daily Le Figaro criticises the new peace proposal that the administration of US President Donald Trump has prepared together with Moscow. According to the newspaper, the plan is „doomed to failure“ because it comes without sufficient Ukrainian participation and contains terms too favorable to Russia.
The proposed framework includes 28 points that could mean territorial concessions for Ukraine and limitations on its military. The document, which the Axios news website sources say was decided by the US administration with Russia, also envisages a long-term security arrangement and a future US role in the region.
Le Figaro expresses scepticism that Kiev was not invited to negotiate the text, which, according to the newspaper, significantly reduces the legitimacy of the entire proposal. Critics argue that the proposal represents a form of capitulation diplomacy that places too many demands on Ukraine and gives Moscow the opportunity to exert further pressure. At the same time, the plan would require Ukraine to surrender part of its armed forces and give up certain types of weapons, which could weaken its defence capability.
Ukraine and its Western allies have previously warned that any peace framework that does not guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity will not be acceptable to Kiev. European countries have stressed that without their involvement and without strong guarantees from the US or NATO, a fair and lasting agreement cannot emerge.
While the Trump administration sees the plan as a realistic way to end the war, Le Figaro points out that without Ukraine's active and equal involvement, there can be no fair ceasefire, but rather unilateral pressure with the risk of failure.
