On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter regarding an event commemorating the 55th anniversary of "ping-pong diplomacy" between China and the United States.
Xi recalled that 55 years ago, leaders of China and the United States, with extraordinary political wisdom and strategic vision, reopened the door to friendly relations between the two countries and created the well-known story of the "little ball that moved the world."
He emphasized the importance of young people from both countries reviving the closeness that emerged during ping-pong diplomacy and participating in a series of sports exchanges.
According to Xi, the foundation of China-U.S. relations is built by the people, and the future of these relations will be shaped by the youth. He expressed his hope that people from all walks of life in both countries, especially the younger generation, would draw wisdom and strength from history.
He called on both nations to get to know each other better through exchanges and cooperation, to move forward together through mutual learning, to strengthen friendly ties, and to contribute to the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of relations between China and the United States.
In April 1971, an American table tennis delegation visited China, marking the first American delegation to the country in decades. This visit launched what is known as "ping-pong diplomacy" and laid the foundation for the later establishment of official diplomatic relations between China and the United States.
The commemorative event for the 55th anniversary and the opening ceremony of China-U.S. youth sports exchanges were held in Beijing. The event was co-organized by the China People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the General Administration of Sport of China, and China Media Group.
