Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's strong support for the United Nations during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday.
Guterres visited Shanghai to attend the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2026 and a high-level meeting on global artificial intelligence governance.
Xi Jinping highly praised António Guterres's work since his appointment as UN Secretary-General ten years ago. He particularly highlighted his efforts in leading the organization, promoting multilateralism, addressing global challenges such as climate change, developing global governance in new areas including artificial intelligence, and initiating a reform process within the UN.
Xi recalled that this year marks the 55th anniversary of China's restoration to its rightful place in the UN. He stated that since then, China has been committed to building world peace, contributing to global development, upholding the international order, and firmly supporting the United Nations.
The Chinese president added that when proposing the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind and four global initiatives, he was guided by one important goal: to maintain the status and authority of the UN.
According to Xi Jinping, the current international situation is characterized by increasingly profound changes and growing instability. Therefore, it is all the more important to practice true multilateralism and strengthen the position and role of the UN.
He called on all countries to uphold justice, abide by principles, seek new solutions, and take responsibility.
"More than 190 countries in the world are on the same boat, and their futures are interconnected. Therefore, we must cooperate and jointly address global challenges in the spirit of solidarity," said Xi Jinping.
China is taking concrete steps and actively seeking the right way for major powers to coexist in a new era, with the goal of bringing greater stability and certainty to the world.
António Guterres stated that China remains a staunch supporter of multilateralism and UN activities, and is also a driving force for international cooperation, regardless of the complexity and difficulty of the international situation. He said that this sets an example for the whole world.
According to Guterres, China has long been committed to addressing imbalances in development, combating climate change, harnessing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity, bridging development gaps, and promoting justice. At the same time, it has put forward a number of important visions and initiatives.
"This is truly admirable," said the UN Secretary-General.
Guterres added that the UN will continue to strengthen cooperation with China, stand against unilateralism, protectionism, power politics, and bullying, uphold the UN Charter and international law, support a multipolar world order, and protect the common interests of the international community.
