BUDAPEST - A major political change is taking place in Hungary. After taking office, the new Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced his intention to carry out sweeping reforms of the state system and is talking about a „regime change“ that he says will return the country to stronger democratic principles and strengthen its anchorage in the European Union.

Hungary has a new Prime Minister. After the victory of the opposition Tisza movement, Péter Magyar has taken over as head of the government, replacing long-time Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The new government says its main goal is to fundamentally transform the functioning of the state and restore public confidence in political institutions.

In his first speech after taking office, Magyar stressed that the country was entering a period of profound change. He said it was necessary to end the concentration of power, strengthen the independence of the judiciary, the media and the civil service, and restore transparency in the functioning of public institutions. The plans would also include an emphasis on fighting corruption and reforming the public procurement system.
On foreign policy, the new Prime Minister declared that Hungary remains a firm part of the European Union, but wants to restore relations based on greater trust and cooperation. This approach is seen as a departure from Budapest's previous strained relationship with Brussels.

After the election results were announced, Viktor Orbán conceded defeat and the handover of power took place in accordance with constitutional rules. Political analysts describe this as one of the most significant political shifts in Hungary in recent years, and one that could have implications for the wider Central European region. The new government is now preparing a programme statement to be submitted to parliament. The first concrete reform steps are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
