Bratislava, October 1 (TASR) - Slovakia's foreign policy orientation will not change, Robert Fico, chairman of the Smer-SD party, told a press conference on Sunday on the party's victory in Saturday's parliamentary elections.
Fico stressed that Slovakia is part of the European Union and noted that Smer-SD supported the referendum on EU accession. As for illegal migration, if the party is part of the future government, it wants to restore controls at the border with Hungary at the first cabinet meeting.
"We are not detached from reality, but that does not mean that we will not be critical of things we do not like about the EU," Fico said, adding that he was sorry, for example, that the EU was not currently a peace project and that it was not less dependent on the US. "Not a millimetre of Slovakia's anchorage will change," he reiterated.
Regarding aid to Ukraine, Fico said people in Slovakia have bigger problems. "Ukraine is a huge tragedy for everyone," he said, adding that if Smer-SD joins the next government, it will do everything possible to get to peace talks as quickly as possible. He rejects further killings and says he prefers longer negotiations on compromises. He says his party is ready to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine and also to help rebuild the state, but he has a different view when it comes to the supply of armaments.
