Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that the top priority is to reach a ceasefire as soon as possible. He stressed that China appreciates the Gulf countries' constant calls for dialogue and negotiations.

Wang, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the statement during a telephone conversation with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

The Kuwaiti minister briefed the Chinese side on the latest developments in the regional situation and said that although Kuwait was not a party to the conflict, it was still affected by the war. He added that the Gulf countries, including Kuwait, remain committed to resolving disputes through dialogue but are not about to give up their legitimate right to self-defence.

Kuwait highly appreciates China's position and efforts and is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China to jointly support the restoration of security and stability in the region as soon as possible. It also places great emphasis on ensuring the security of Chinese personnel and institutions and will continue to do so.

Wang said China has always supported resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means and stressed that the ongoing fighting is a war that should not have happened and benefits no one.

According to Wang, the United States and Israel launched military attacks against Iran without UN authorisation, while negotiations between Iran and the US were still ongoing, in clear violation of international law.

At the same time, he said, the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the Gulf countries must be fully respected and any attack on innocent civilians and non-military targets must be condemned.

China appreciates the Gulf countries' constant calls for dialogue and negotiation and will continue to pursue peace.

The Chinese government's special envoy for Middle East affairs has already travelled to the region to mediate talks and will strengthen communication with Kuwait and other countries.

Wang expressed hope and confidence that Kuwait will ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel.
