On Tuesday, Chinese diplomat Fu Cong stated that actions by the UN Security Council should not provide a "license to use force," and should not further escalate tensions or "pour fuel on the fire."
On Tuesday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would have "strongly supported" states using commercial maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz to coordinate defensive activities to ensure safe passage, including escorting commercial vessels.
Eleven members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, while China and Russia voted against it, and Colombia and Pakistan abstained.
In his explanation of China's vote, Fu Cong stated that the conflict in Iran and its consequences continue to seriously undermine regional and global stability, impact the world economy, and cause increasing disruption.
He stated that the Security Council should not rush to vote on a resolution when there are serious concerns among its members.
According to him, the United States and Israel, without a mandate from the Security Council and during ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, have carried out military strikes against Iran, which is a violation of the UN Charter.
Fu Cong also warned that the adoption of the resolution would send an "extremely negative signal" and have serious consequences.
After the vote, in an interview with CMG, he emphasized that the resolution was not balanced and ignored the main causes of the conflict.
He added that, according to China, the main cause of disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is the "unlawful military actions of the United States and Israel against Iran."
China also called on the United States and Israel to immediately cease these actions, and on Iran to stop attacks on facilities in the Persian Gulf and to resume dialogue.
Both Russia and Iran criticized the resolution in their statements, calling it unbalanced and accusing the wrong party of the conflict.
