On March 26th, UN Secretary-General António Guterres held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The main topic of discussion was the tense situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
During the call, Abbas Araghchi stated that, according to Iran, the current uncertainty in the region is a result of actions by the United States and Israel. He also emphasized that Iran, as a coastal state, considers it its right to restrict the passage of ships that are linked to hostile countries or their allies.
In response, António Guterres recalled that the UN is actively working to resolve the situation through diplomatic means. He stated that the appointment of French diplomat Jean Arnault as a special envoy for the Middle East was intended to establish direct contact with the Iranian side and to promote dialogue.
According to him, this step is part of a broader UN effort to de-escalate tensions in the region and to find a stable solution through communication and diplomacy.
