PRAGUE - The leader of TOP 09, Matěj Ondřej Havel, sharply criticizes the policies of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's government. In an interview with DVTV, he stated that while he doesn't have a personal issue with Andrej Babiš as a person, he fundamentally disagrees with the policies being pursued by the current government. Havel also claims that the government made promises to voters that it is now unable to fulfill, and he criticizes the way in which the debate about the state budget is being conducted.
“I personally don't have a problem with Andrej Babiš, but I strongly dislike the policies he implements. However, I believe that a large part of the public will understand that this person is constantly deceiving them,” said Havel. He cited pensioners and pre-election promises regarding pension increases as examples. According to him, the original expectations of voters will not be met to the extent that they were promised. Havel also criticized the entire governing coalition. In his opinion, the problem with what he calls "lying" does not end with Andrej Babiš. According to Havel, other government parties, including Motorists, are equally guilty of these practices.
“The lying doesn't stop with Andrej Babiš. The rest of the governing coalition, led by Motorists, is doing a great job of keeping up!” declared the leader of TOP 09. He also emphasized that his party wants to politically defeat the current government, but does not want to use the same methods. “Yes, the goal is to defeat this government, but we will not lie about it,” said Havel. However, he admitted that the political struggle is more difficult in a situation where the government has extensive financial and political resources at its disposal, and its representatives can communicate without significant restrictions.
The leader of TOP 09 also commented on his own political position. He reacted to a poll in which 69 percent of voters in the Czech Republic did not recognize his name. Havel does not view this result solely negatively, but also as a challenge for further work. “I have been the chairman for six months, and don't think that our efforts to increase my recognition are not something we are working on. We are succeeding in raising it, but it is not easy to find your place in the sun,” he said. According to him, TOP 09 will therefore continue to strive to strengthen its visibility and reach a wider segment of the public.
Havel also devoted a significant portion of the interview to the ammunition initiative. He described it not only as assistance to Ukraine, but also as a significant diplomatic achievement for the Czech Republic. According to him, the initiative has shown that Prague is capable of actively participating in international affairs and not relying solely on the course of events. “The ammunition initiative is not just aid to a country under attack; it is also a huge diplomatic success. We have shown that we belong to the side of the civilized world,” said Havel. According to him, the Czech Republic has gained the respect of Western partners thanks to this initiative.
However, his assessment also highlights fundamental differences between TOP 09 and part of the political scene in their views on the war in Ukraine, foreign policy, and state management. While Havel emphasizes continued support for Ukraine and an active role for the Czech Republic, his critics may perceive his position as too one-sided. Havel's criticism of the government also touches on the state budget. Budgetary policy is currently one of the topics on which the governing and opposition parties are significantly divided.
TOP 09 has consistently pointed out the state's debt and the potential impact of current economic policies on future generations. This political debate opens up not only questions about specific budget items for the public, but also a broader discussion about what promises politicians can make before elections and how they subsequently fulfill them. Havel is signaling that TOP 09 intends to base its criticism of the current government on these issues.
