Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called for professionally and systematically conducted search and rescue operations following a landslide in one of the districts of Chongqing Municipality in southwestern China, which trapped several people and left others missing.
The landslide occurred around 9:10 AM on Friday in the Hanjia urban area of Pengshui County. A mass of earth and rock engulfed several residential buildings located at the foot of a mountain.
Xi Jinping, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the need to prevent further related disasters, ensure appropriate medical care for the injured, and effectively address the consequences of the disaster.
According to the president, it is also necessary to determine the cause of the disaster, learn from it, and thoroughly investigate and eliminate the risks of other geological hazards.
Xi Jinping stated that all regions and relevant authorities should strengthen risk monitoring, early warning systems, and controls to protect people's lives and property.
Premier Li Qiang, who is also a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that relevant departments must diligently fulfill their duties, comprehensively identify potential hazards, and take effective measures for disaster prevention and response.
Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, led a group of officials from relevant authorities to the site of the landslide. Their task is to direct rescue operations and emergency measures.
Authorities in Chongqing have deployed all available forces to search for the missing, rescue trapped individuals, treat the injured, and address the consequences of the disaster.
