German Chancellor Friedrich Merz strongly criticised the military conflict against Iran led by the United States and Israel. He described it as a „completely unnecessary war“ which, in his view, poses a serious risk to the stability of the global economy.

After the informal summit of EU leaders, Merz pointed out that the effects of the conflict are far from ending with rising oil prices. They have a much wider reach and require a united European response, he said.

The Chancellor stressed the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf region, which is one of the key hubs of world energy trade. The current tensions, he said, revealed how fragile the globalised economy is and how easily it can be disrupted.

He also said that the geopolitical consequences of the conflict in the Middle East are already affecting energy markets not only in Europe, but also in Asia and the United States.

Merz also recalled that the European Union is facing additional challenges due to the war in Iran, adding to the existing crises. Germany, he said, cannot solve these problems alone.

„If Europe fails, Germany will also fail,“ warned the Chancellor and called for closer cooperation between European states to cope with the impact of the current situation.
