SÃO PAULO - Brazil condemned the United States for extending, for another year, emergency trade powers against the South American country based on "unsubstantiated and false" claims. The measure allows the continued application of punitive tariffs on Brazilian exports.
The Brazilian government criticized the United States' decision in an official statement. It rejected the repetition of "unsubstantiated and false arguments" claiming that Brazil represents an "unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States".
Designating Brazil as a threat requiring emergency economic measures enabled Washington to impose tariffs of up to 35 percent on a range of Brazilian industrial goods. The measure is part of the tariff policy launched by U.S. President Donald Trump in 2025.
Washington claims the emergency measures are necessary due to alleged human rights violations, suppression of free speech of American citizens and companies, and political persecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro was recently found guilty of attempting a coup after failing in elections in which he sought re-election.
Brazil categorically rejected these accusations, stating they had already been thoroughly refuted during several bilateral talks.
The Brazilian government further emphasized that "it is entirely inappropriate to label Brazil as a threat to the United States, particularly given the historical diplomatic relations and friendship that unite both nations".
