WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said today that he is running out of patience with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Trump said this in an interview with Fox News television. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has been trying to broker peace in Ukraine, where the Russian military invaded in February 2022 on Putin's orders. While Ukraine has repeatedly agreed to the U.S. proposal for an unconditional cease-fire, Moscow has not.
"It's pretty much running out, it's running out fast," Trump said regarding the extent of his patience with the Russian leader's continued aggression against Ukraine. In the campaign leading up to last year's US presidential election, Trump claimed he would end the war in Ukraine very quickly.
Since his return to the White House in January, however, he has failed to do so, not helped by a personal meeting with Putin in mid-August in Alaska. Russia, on the other hand, is stepping up its airstrikes on Ukraine, and Trump has already made his disillusionment with Russia's approach clear on several occasions.
Poland, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, felt the effects of Russia's war in Ukraine on Wednesday night. Poland has seen 19 violations of its airspace by Russian drones. While Trump has called the drone incident a possible mistake, officials in Poland, as well as Germany, the European Union and Ukraine, have spoken of Russian intent. Tonight CEST, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at Warsaw's request over the drone penetration over Poland.
