WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump granted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán a major exemption from the embargo on Russian oil and gas imports during his previous administration. The move, which was the subject of international criticism at the time of its approval, significantly strengthened Orbán's position and allowed Hungary to maintain privileged access to cheap Russian energy.
While most Western countries sought to be as independent as possible from Russian raw materials, Orbán's Hungary pursued the opposite course. The Prime Minister openly defended his country's economic interests, arguing that an immediate disruption of supplies would have disastrous consequences for the Hungarian economy and households. Trump's exception gave him the benefit of the doubt and provided him with political cover.
This decision was not accidental. It symbolized the mutual sympathy and similar approach to international politics that the two leaders share. Orbán has often praised Trump's „realpolitik“ and emphasis on bilateral relations instead of multilateral alliances. The energy exemption has thus become a material manifestation of this alliance.
For Hungary, the agreement brought concrete economic benefits and strengthened energy security. In the wider geopolitical context, however, it has exposed cracks in the unified Western stance towards Russia and confirmed Orbán's reputation as an unconventional player within NATO and the EU, willing to go his own way if he considers it beneficial to the national interest.
