PRAGUE - The Mayors and Independents (STAN) movement will elect its new leadership today at the national assembly in Prague. The movement's chairman and deputy prime minister, Vít Rakušan, will defend his position, and no opposing candidate is known yet. Rakušan has led the movement since 2019 and has faced several crises in the past, including cases affecting trust in STAN's leadership.
Industry and Trade Minister Lukáš Vlček intends to run for the post of First Vice-Chairman again. Other members of the current top management have also confirmed their intention to defend the vice-presidency. It is expected that the congress will bring confirmation of the current direction of the movement and a debate on its strategy for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The elections will take place in approximately four months, so the presentation of the regional leaders of the candidates will be an important part of the programme. STAN will try to attract voters not only in its traditional bastions, but also in regions where it has not yet gained significant support.
The results of the elections at the congress will show how much confidence the current leadership has among the delegates and how strongly the movement is prepared to face the upcoming political challenges.
