PRAGUE - Legendary singer Marta Kubišová said goodbye to public performances on Saturday evening. She sang her best-known songs, including the iconic Prayer for Marta, in front of a packed auditorium in the Great Hall of Prague's Lucerna. The concert, which was announced as her last public performance, was held on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the ban on her singing career. On stage, Kubišová recalled not only the symbolic songs associated with the Prague Spring and the normalisation period, but also songs of a lighter nature. The audience could hear Ring-o-ding or her version of the famous Hey Jude.

According to the audience, the atmosphere in Lucerna was both moving and festive. "It was a celebration of life and music, but also a reminder of what Marta had to go through," said one of the visitors. After the final song, Kubišová thanked the audience and her fellow performers and received several minutes of standing applause.

She was joined on stage by guests from the younger generation. Vojtěch Dyk sang, for example, and actresses and singers Hana Holišová and Berenika Kohoutová offered their own interpretations of songs from the theatre recital Marta, where they alternate in the title role. The concert thus brought together several generations of artists and fans.

Marta Kubišová is one of the most prominent personalities of Czech popular music in the second half of the 20th century. After 1968, her career was forcibly interrupted by a ban on public performances, which lasted until the Velvet Revolution. Her Prayer for Martha became a symbol of resistance against the occupation and later also the anthem of November 1989.

Today's performance closed an important chapter in Czech music history. For many fans it was not only the last chance to hear Marta Kubišová live, but also a powerful reminder of her life journey, courage and unmistakable voice.
