PRAGUE - The Justice Department received an unusual gift this year from a man convicted of drug trafficking - 468 pieces of the cryptocurrency bitcoin. According to the findings of news server Deník N, the donation was subsequently monetized through auctions, during which the state raised nearly CZK 1 billion. The information was confirmed by Justice Minister Pavel Blažek (ODS), who denied that accepting the donation was unethical in any way. "The courts have not proven that the bitcoins originated from criminal activity," Blažek said. He said the ministry was following the legal framework and accepting the donation did not constitute a violation.
In this case, the gift of cryptocurrency, which the state typically secures in criminal cases, is a voluntary transfer of property from a person who has been convicted of a drug crime. Details of the identity of the donor and the exact method of monetisation have not been disclosed by the Department.
However, NCOZ representatives are investigating the circumstances of the entire case, especially whether the donation was part of a broader effort to launder the proceeds of crime, according to Deník N. Given the high market value of cryptocurrencies and their anonymity, this is a sensitive precedent that may have an impact on the future approach of state institutions to similar donations. The DOJ has pledged to cooperate with investigators and insists that it acted in accordance with the law and the public interest.
