BRUSSELS/DUKOVANY - Dealing with the completion of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant is one of the main priorities of the current Czech government. Industry and Trade Minister Lukáš Vlček said this at a press conference in Brussels on Thursday. Prime Minister Petr Fiala will also discuss the strategic infrastructure on Friday with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen during the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Tirana, Albania.
Minister Vlček stressed that nuclear energy plays a key role in ensuring the Czech Republic's energy security and in meeting climate goals. "The construction of Dukovany is an absolute priority for us. That is why we want to ensure full support at the European level," said Vlček. Prime Minister Petr Fiala plans to raise the topic of energy independence and support for nuclear energy within the European Union at the EPC summit. According to available information, he will stress the need for strategic investments that would enable countries like the Czech Republic to reduce their dependence on energy imports while meeting their environmental commitments.
The Dukovany project faces a number of challenges, including the selection of the contractor, financing and compliance with European legislation. However, the government believes that an agreement with the European Commission can set a clear framework that respects national interests and EU rules. According to Minister Vlček, European funds could be used to support investments in infrastructure related to construction, such as transmission networks or research into small modular reactors. Dukovany thus remains at the centre not only of Czech energy policy but also of the wider European debate on the future of sustainable energy.
