In an engaging YouTube interview, Czech philosophy professor Anna Hogenová answers seven existential questions generated by artificial intelligence - and turns them into an urgent manifesto for the 21st century. She argues that true wealth is „the courage to be,“ not material gain, and shows why rediscovering our inner source of being is the key to personal and social renewal.
At the invitation of the moderator Tomáš Lukavec, the professor Anna Hogenová, one of the of the most original philosophical figures of Central Europe, addressed seven questions constructed by artificial intelligence that probe the deepest layers of human existence. Its basic thesis is surprisingly direct: only by confronting nothingness can we regain authentic freedom.
Drawing on Husserl, Heidegger, and her mentor Jan Patočka, Hogen distinguishes between „being“, by the myriad objects that fill space and time, and „being“, the invisible base from which every object springs. Being cannot be grasped or measured; it is only achieved „negatively“, by realizing what is not. Paradoxically, this negative path leads to the most positive human condition: chorismos, the inner break that appears when we look at mortality without anesthetic. The fear of death, by understanding its nature, will disappear. When the familiar support of certainties collapses, the soul becomes „full of emptiness“ - and therefore unlimited. Fear recedes and radical freedom sets in.
This liberation, as Hogen points out, is threatened by a civilization hypnotized by progress, metrics, and the politics of command and control. From war propaganda to productivity charts, we are inundated with imperatives - „imperial phalleys,“ as she borrows from Heidegger - whose the goal is to force obedience and profit. The result is spiritual anemia: people who work harder, consume faster, but lose touch with their own source, the inner source, that makes each person unique. „If you dam the spring,“ he warns, „you are no longer yourself."
Hogen's solution is both simple and challenging. First, dare to ask questions to which there is no immediate answer. Living in the „tension of enquiry“ is like a philosophical pregnancy; only patient waiting brings true knowledge. Second, allow yourself to suffer. When pain is not masked by chemicals or drowned in entertainment, eventually through the understanding of the inevitability of this pain, turns into its opposite - joy. At the same time, it is also for a person Liberating. Third, cultivate all the powers of the soul, not just logic. Beauty, righteousness, devotion, and an emotional bond with the ancestors are nutrients that reason alone cannot provide. Education must therefore be a formation, not a mere imparting of information.
Technology is not the enemy, he explains; the danger is that we give in to it and we'll leave her to her interpretive ability. The artificial intelligence that formulated its questions became the bridge, not the master, precisely because the human beings discussing rejected ready-made scenarios. „The only defense,“ concludes Hogen, „is what we're doing right now: speak out, despite the risk of a blow.“ In this the courage to speak - and to listen - being itself becomes audible again.
Anna Hogen explores the idea that people go to the desert to cleanse themselves internally from the deposits we collect every day. The desert represents a space where one can be free from the noise of the outside world, allowing them to face their inner fears, emotions and truths. This confrontation often leads to deep personal knowledge and spiritual purificationIt is similar to the experience of individuals who seek out challenging environments such as high mountains or long sea voyages to cleanse their minds and souls of trivialities and find deeper strength and clarity.
For a global audience struggling with instability, its message has an impact far beyond Prague. Whether you're writing code in Silicon Valley, rebuilding after conflict in Kiev, or commuting to work in Hong Kong, the task is the same: rediscover the arche that drives you, protect it and let it flow. Wealth, security and even peace depend less on external mechanisms than on of souls willing to risk authenticity. The call has been made: freedom begins with the answer.
