PRAGUE – When Milan Hein ceremoniously opened the Ungelt Theatre in an ancient cellar near Old Town Square 30 years ago, his friend, actor Miloš Kopecký, advised him: „It would be ideal if Ungelt also had a café at street level, from which one could descend directly into the theatre.“ A long-held dream is now coming true. In a 14th-century building directly above the Ungelt theatre hall, the long-awaited Kavárna Ungelt café has just opened. The interior was designed by renowned film architect Jan Vlček. His design honours the historical character of the place, while combining the aesthetics of old Prague cafés with a more modern style.
The café is accessible directly from the street and connected to the theatre, but it will not only serve Ungelt's audience. Thanks to its all-day operation, it will become a refuge for residents of the Old Town and visitors to Prague. Homemade desserts and select coffee will be available there until the end of the year. Thirty years ago, Miloš Kopecký recommended to Milan Heine: „It would be ideal if Ungelt also had a café at street level.“ Today, the dream of this Czech theatre legend has finally become a reality. Come and taste the select coffee, homemade desserts and breakfasts that will keep you coming back. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Before each performance, you can now visit the Ungelt Theatre's basement Theatre Bar, which is open on performance days from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; after 6 p.m., the club is reserved for evening performance audiences. In the 11th-century premises (the original Romanesque foundations are visible in the theatre club), you will find dozens of chairs donated by actors and other prominent figures. In addition to tea, the menu includes Jiří Langmajer's 3666 brand coffee, named after his date of birth, wine from Michal Kubík's family winery in Velké Bílovice, and now, in the pre-Christmas season, mulled wine with the aroma of spices. Signed coffee packages are also available to take away. The menu includes traditional open sandwiches, desserts and roasted almonds. And so that theatregoers don't waste time queuing during the interval, they can order refreshments in advance, and the helpful baristas at Ungelt will bring everything straight to their table.
