BERLIN - The German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is preparing a major strengthening of the Bundeswehr's defence capabilities. According to Reuters, which had the opportunity to review a directive from Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer, the expansion of air defence will be at the heart of the planned reforms and investments.
The move comes at a time of rising tensions in Europe and globally, when security threats are becoming increasingly complex. The German military, long criticised for inadequate equipment and slow modernisation, is now set to undergo structural and technological changes, Breuer said.
"We must be prepared to counter new types of attacks, including those conducted by long-range missiles or unmanned aerial vehicles," the agency said in the directive. Building a multi-layered air defence system that includes cooperation within NATO is to be a key element.
According to the portal Politico among the top priorities of the new defence plan is the ability to conduct strikes deep inside enemy territory. This would mean reinforcing missile units and modernising artillery so that the Bundeswehr can respond not only defensively but also offensively in the event of a threat.
The planned investments are part of a broader strategy to prepare Germany for new geopolitical challenges and consolidate its role as a key pillar of European defence. The government has not yet disclosed a specific financial framework, but experts say it could be in the tens of billions of euros.
