KIEV - The next round of peace talks between the United States, Ukraine and Russia will take place on 4 and 5 February in Abu Dhabi. The information was posted on the X social network by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to him, it is to be a continuation of diplomatic contacts aimed at seeking ways to end the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for the fourth year.
According to earlier expectations, the meeting of the representatives of the three countries should have taken place already in these days, but President Zelensky did not provide any further explanation for this shift.
It is not clear whether the change of date was due to organisational reasons or to differences in the positions of the parties. The Ukrainian presidential office has only stated that Kiev is ready to actively participate in the negotiations and to push for its key demands, in particular the issue of territorial integrity and security guarantees. The United Arab Emirates has increasingly emerged in recent months as a neutral diplomatic platform for negotiations between states that otherwise maintain tense or hostile relations. Abu Dhabi has hosted several rounds of informal consultations and exchanges on humanitarian issues, prisoner exchanges and energy infrastructure security.
From the Russian side, Dmitry Medvedev, Vice President of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, commented on the ongoing contacts. According to him, talks with the United States after the arrival of US President Donald Trump are „more productive“ than in the previous period. Medvedev also indicated that Moscow perceives a change in the tone of the US administration, especially on issues of strategic stability and direct communication between Washington and Moscow.
The details of the planned negotiations have not yet been officially published. However, it is expected that not only military issues, but also the humanitarian situation, the functioning of the grain corridors and the possibility of a gradual reduction of combat activities will be on the agenda. Diplomats warn that a quick breakthrough cannot be expected, but they consider the continuation of the talks as a signal that all sides are aware of the risks of further escalation of the conflict. The outcome of the Abu Dhabi talks could indicate whether there is room for a broader peace process or whether contacts will remain limited to partial and technical issues.
