LONDON - American tennis player Taylor Fritz will play in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Grand Slam for the third time in four years. The fifth-ranked player in the ATP world rankings had his work cut out for him in the eighth round when his Australian opponent Jordan Thompson abandoned the match due to injury. At the time of the break, Fritz was leading 6-1 and 3-0.
The match on Court 1 lasted just over half an hour. Thompson required medical treatment for a leg injury during the second set, but was ultimately unable to continue. Fritz, who dominated the opening set with his excellent serve and incisive baseline shots, was able to celebrate a quick promotion to the top eight.
"It's always unlucky when a game ends like that. I wish Jordan a speedy recovery," Fritz said after the game. "But I'm happy to be back and I'm looking forward to the next challenge."
In the semi-finals, Fritz will face Russian Karen Khachanov, who took on the ninth seed Alex de Minaur. It will be the third attempt for the American tennis player to reach the semifinals of the world's most famous tournament. On the previous two occasions, his journey ended in the quarterfinals.
The tournament continues on Wednesday, when all men's quarterfinals will be played.
