ADDIS ABEBA - At the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Committee, Algeria won 34 votes in the third round of elections, beating Libya, which received 15 votes. Morocco was the second candidate, but withdrew before the election. The new Council members for the 2025-2028 term were Cameroon (centre), Ethiopia (east), Eswatini (south) and Nigeria (west).
According to the Algerian Embassy in Ethiopia, this victory is in recognition of its role and position under President Abdelmajid Tebboun in promoting peace and establishing security on the African continent. In addition, the appointment of a member of the AU International Law Commission and the African Space Council is also on the agenda of the special session, the continental organization said.
