Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a maximum effort in the search and rescue effort following a landslide that buried 10 houses and caused more than 30 people to disappear in the city of Yibin in southwestern Sichuan province on Saturday.
The landslide occurred around 11:50 a.m. in Jinping Village in Junlian County. Xi stressed the need for a swift and thorough search, effective aftermath management, and enhanced monitoring of natural disasters. He also warned of secondary dangers and called for scientifically sound rescue procedures.
The President called on local authorities to increase vigilance against risks, rigorously inspect potential hazardous areas and establish clear responsibility for disaster prevention to protect the lives and property of residents.
Premier Li Qiang stressed the urgency of the situation and called for minimising casualties and properly managing the aftermath. He also ordered a rapid investigation into the cause of the landslide and a reassessment of the geological risks in the surrounding areas.
Vice Premier Liu Guozhong arrived on the scene to coordinate rescue operations. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Emergency Management have launched an emergency response, while Sichuan Province and Yibin City have mobilized resources to support the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
