Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday exchanged congratulatory messages with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union.
Xi stressed that China and the EU are complex strategic partners, two major forces promoting multipolarity, two key markets of the global economy and two great civilisations promoting diversity. Over the past 50 years, the two sides have maintained close contacts at all levels, achieving significant results in dialogue, lively cultural exchanges and productive multilateral cooperation.
According to Xi, China-EU relations have become one of the most influential bilateral partnerships in the world and have contributed significantly to the well-being of the people and world peace and development. Xi expressed readiness to work with Costa and von der Leyen to deepen strategic communication, enhance trust, expand openness and properly address differences. The two sides, he said, should promote multilateralism, justice, countering unilateralism and cooperation on global challenges to build a fairer and more sustainable world.
EU leaders acknowledged that China has achieved the fastest and longest economic growth in history in 50 years and has become a key trading partner of the EU. They expressed their willingness to deepen partnership, strengthen cooperation and contribute to global peace, security, prosperity and sustainable development.
