Colombia has officially joined China's global Belt and Road Initiative. Presidents Xi Jinping and Gustavo Petro signed a cooperation plan in Beijing on 14 May 2025 to strengthen the two countries' strategic partnership.
The meeting took place during the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, where Xi identified Colombia as a key partner of Latin America. This year, the two countries are celebrating the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Xi Jinping stressed that China is ready to import more quality products from Colombia, promote investment by Chinese companies and participate in infrastructure projects. He also mentioned cooperation in areas such as wind energy, electric mobility, the digital economy and artificial intelligence.
Petro praised Sino-Latin American cooperation as a key tool for development and called for joint efforts to defend the interests of developing countries. He stressed that Colombia is ready to work closely with China not only on the Belt and Road, but also on issues of global justice.
The partnership between China and Colombia is thus entering a new phase, with the ambition to bring concrete benefits to the citizens of both countries.
