At the third meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China and the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) on 29 May, a major five-point consensus was announced. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, stressed at a press conference alongside Kiribati's President and Foreign Minister, Taneti Maamau, that this was a key moment for strengthening cooperation in the region.
1. Equality between nations - Both sides agreed to respect mutual equality regardless of the size of the states. The Pacific countries reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China policy and supported China's efforts to maintain its sovereignty.
2. Joint development - Cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative is to be linked to the Blue Pacific Strategy 2050. China will also facilitate the export of quality products from island states to its market.
3. Justice and multilateralism - In the context of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, both sides will stress support for multilateralism and the defence of the rights of developing countries.
4. Openness and partnership - Pacific States have the right to choose their partners freely. The focus will be on addressing key challenges such as climate change and economic development.
5. Intercultural dialogue - China and the island countries will strengthen exchanges in culture, education and media to jointly contribute to the development of world civilization.
This consensus gives a new impetus to regional diplomacy and consolidates China's role as a key partner in the Pacific.
