PRAGUE – The Czech Republic is facing an exceptionally busy year in 2026, both politically and economically. Voters will go to the polls in several types of elections, the new government will be finalising its personnel appointments, and the state will enter the year with a provisional budget. At the same time, changes in the social sphere and in everyday household expenses will become apparent.
The public's attention will be focused on the autumn elections to municipal councils and one-third of the Senate. Municipal elections traditionally reflect local issues and personalities the most, and a fierce campaign is expected, especially in larger cities. The Senate elections could have a major impact on the balance of power in the upper house of Parliament, where decisions are made on key legislation and constitutional changes.
The year 2026 will also be the first full year of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's (ANO) government, which, following its appointment, is gradually completing the staffing of individual ministries and key offices. The cabinet will have to deal with pressure to stabilise public finances at a time when the state is entering the year under a provisional budget regime. This limits the possibilities for new investments and increases the pressure for a quick political agreement on the state budget.
Significant changes also await citizens in the area of social policy. From January, the minimum wage will increase, which should help low-income employees cope with rising living costs. Old-age pensions will also be higher, with their indexation partially offsetting inflation from the previous period. However, trade unions warn that the pace of wage growth may still not be sufficient to bring about a real improvement in living standards.
On the other hand, households must also prepare for price increases. The increase in the price of motorway toll stickers, which the government justifies as necessary for investment in transport infrastructure, will have a significant impact. The year 2026 will thus be a period of significant political decisions, economic challenges and changes that will affect the daily lives of most people.
