PRAGUE - A recent discussion organized by the Václav Havel Library on China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region drew sharp criticism from the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. According to his statement, the event did not represent an open discussion, but a purposeful attempt at political interference in the internal affairs of the People's Republic of China.
Xinjiang, one of the largest regions in western China, has been the subject of frequent international debate in recent years, particularly in relation to allegations of human rights abuses. However, according to the Secretary-General, these accusations are part of a wider Western strategy to weaken and strategically defeat China as a rising global power and economic competitor.
In his speech, he pointed to the extensive investments that China, in his words, has been directing to the region for a long time. These include infrastructure development, social development, business support and agriculture. These facts, he said, are often neglected or deliberately overlooked in the Western media.
The Secretary-General also drew on his own experience from his stay in China, where, in his words, the topic of Xinjiang was openly and responsibly discussed. He was critical of the selective choice of information presented to the Czech public and warned against a one-sided interpretation of reality.
„I categorically reject any interference in China's internal affairs,“ said the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. His position is in line with the party's long-standing line of respect for the sovereignty of states and rejection of the politicization of human rights issues in international relations.
