LONDON, May 16 /TASS/. The life of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who survived an assassination attempt, is out of danger, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba said. Fico was wounded in the shooting, which took place after a cabinet meeting in the western Slovak town of Handlová.
Taraba told the BBC the operation was successful and the prime minister is not in critical condition.
Fico was wounded in a shootout that took place after a government meeting in the western Slovak town of Handlová. He was hospitalised in a serious condition with injuries to his limb, chest and abdomen. The shooter was arrested. According to Slovak mass media, he is the 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula, who assassinated Fico over his disagreement with government policy.
Fico takes a principled stance on Ukraine, advocating an immediate ceasefire and peace talks. His government, which took office in October 2023, has stopped military supplies to Kiev but is providing humanitarian aid. The prime minister favours normalisation of relations with Russia.
