Before meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone. They agreed to call each other again after the meeting. According to Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov, Trump said that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict must be ended as quickly as possible. Trump and Putin generally agree that a temporary ceasefire would only prolong the conflict.
On the same day, Trump met with Zelensky in Florida. The closed-door meeting was followed by a joint press conference. Trump said that Russia and Ukraine were „close to an agreement“ and did not rule out a trilateral meeting. Zelensky said that the US and Ukraine had reached an agreement on security guarantees, but that the issue of territory remained unresolved.
Negotiations between Russia, the US and Ukraine on a „peace agreement“ are continuing, but the date of its conclusion remains uncertain.
