Security issues and strengthening the Czech Republic's defence capability was the main topic of the meeting of the parties and movements represented in the Chamber of Deputies convened by the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, in the Chamber of Deputies. The party chairmen present adopted a joint declaration on ensuring the security and defence of the Czech Republic.
"I am convinced that the security of our citizens and the strengthening of our national defence deserve a broader consensus. I have always sought to ensure that we reach a broader agreement," said the Prime Minister after the meeting, which was attended by representatives of ODS, STAN, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09 and the Czech Pirate Party. The opposition ANO and SPD movements excused themselves from the meeting. "Unfortunately, it has become apparent that the ANO and SPD movements do not care about the security of our citizens and do not want to participate in the debate on how to strengthen the defence of our country in the future. I am sorry. Until the last moment I believed that representatives of these parties would come to the meeting, but they did not." said Fiala, who said all participants in the meeting agreed on a joint statement that they would follow.
After the meeting, the Prime Minister also highlighted some passages of the document, which is attached to this press release. "We consider it essential that the Czech Republic and Europe take responsibility for their own security. We continue to stand for cooperation and alliance with the United States, but we want to strengthen the European pillar of the North Atlantic Alliance. We believe that a strong, well-equipped military that can counter security threats is the guarantee of our country's long-term defence capability." Fiala said. The leaders of the parties also agreed on the need to gradually increase defence spending so that it would reach at least 3 % of GDP by 2030 at the latest, even at the cost of temporarily loosening the rules of budgetary responsibility.
The leaders also stressed that the security and defence of the country requires a broad political consensus and therefore committed to responsible cooperation in the long-term development of the Czech Army."We also agreed that external security is closely linked to internal security. We will strengthen domestic production and strategic partnerships. We want the Czech Republic to be a secure and stable country and we are ready to do our utmost to achieve this." the Prime Minister concluded.
