More than 28,000 women and girls have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023, when fighting resumed in the enclave, humanitarian news service ReliefWeb reported, citing UN Women, a gender equality body.
"UN Women estimates that more than 28,000 women and girls have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023 - that's an average of one woman and one girl killed every hour in attacks by Israeli forces," says the report. "There are thousands of mothers among those killed."
"Since the collapse of the ceasefire in March 2025, conditions in Gaza have further deteriorated," UN Women said, stressing that the situation has been exacerbated by the humanitarian blockade and that more than a million women and girls in the enclave now 'face catastrophic levels of hunger'.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated on 7 October 2023, when gunmen from the radical Palestinian Hamas movement based in the Gaza Strip launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza to dismantle Hamas' political and military infrastructure and secure the release of the hostages.
On 18 March 2025, the Israeli army resumed fighting in Gaza, launching intensive strikes on the enclave and breaking the ceasefire signed in January this year.
