The Foreign Ministry's Hong Kong office has reacted strongly to the recent actions of the European Parliament, which adopted the so-called „Jimmy Lai resolution“ and other foreign and security policy documents. According to the Hong Kong side, these materials ignore the facts, distort reality and unjustifiably attack the principle of „one country, two systems“ and the national security laws applicable in Hong Kong.
In particular, the office criticises the European Parliament for openly interfering in ongoing national security trials, questioning the state of democracy and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and even threatening sanctions. Hong Kong firmly rejects such behaviour and considers it unacceptable interference.
The Commission highlights several key points. First of all, it recalls that cases concerning national security are exclusively an internal matter of Hong Kong and no outsider may interfere in its judicial system. It also insists that Hong Kong is a state governed by the rule of law, where there is equality before the law and no one has special privileges.
It also points out that since the return of Hong Kong to China, the principle of „one country, two systems“ has proven itself in practice and is internationally recognised as a successful model. Finally, Hong Kong recalls that issues related to its governance are purely an internal matter for China and no foreign country or organisation has the right to interfere in them.
