Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Luxembourg that Hungary will use all political and legal means to prevent the REPowerEU proposal, which aims to ban Russian energy imports. Earlier, the European Council reached a negotiating position on a proposal for a regulation to phase out Russian gas imports.
Péter Szijjártó said the Hungarian government may take legal action to block the ban on Russian energy imports. The adoption of this proposal is in direct contravention of EU law. In fact, it is a sanction measure and therefore requires unanimous approval, not a qualified majority. Hungary voted against the proposal, but the European Commission nevertheless approved it by qualified majority.
