The European Union will continue to firmly support Denmark and its autonomous territory of Greenland. This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas at the Arctic Frontiers 2026 conference in Tromsø, Norway, on 3 February. Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt stressed on the same occasion that Greenland „will never be sold“.
Kallas confirmed that the European Union stands by Denmark and Greenland and consistently supports the United Nations Charter. She also stressed that the future of Greenland should be decided primarily by the people of Greenland themselves, together with Denmark. At the same time, she said that the EU needed to develop a new Arctic policy to respond to growing geopolitical tensions, the effects of climate change and growing economic interests in the region.
The conference was also attended by Vivian Motzfeldt, who again clearly rejected any speculation about the future status of the island. She recalled that Greenland has long insisted on the protection of the right to self-determination, territorial integrity and respect for international law, and has stood by Denmark on these issues.
