Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a second telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump over the weekend, focusing on the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
In his statement, Erdogan expressed appreciation for Trump's recent remarks calling for an end to hostilities and for efforts to bring peace to the region. He stressed the urgency of taking immediate measures to prevent a catastrophe that could set the entire region on fire.
Erdogan reiterated Turkey's position that diplomacy is the only viable way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue and reaffirmed Turkey's readiness to contribute to and assist in this effort.
The Turkish leader also highlighted the destructive spiral of violence initiated by the Israeli attacks on Iran and pointed to the irreversible economic and civilian losses on both sides. He warned that this dangerous trend must be stopped to prevent further destruction.
This conversation between Erdogan and Trump is their second discussion on regional tensions in the past few days, the first taking place on Saturday.
Trump has previously expressed confidence that peace will soon be established between Iran and Israel. He noted on his Truth Social page that meetings and telephone conversations are currently taking place to that end. According to Trump, Iran and Israel should reach an agreement on the cessation of hostilities.
