On Sunday afternoon, Czech President Petr Pavel will receive a foreign head of state at Prague Castle, the Communications Department of the Office of the President of the Republic informed today without further details. According to information published by Seznam Zprávy and iDNES.cz, the guest is expected to be Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose visit to Prague comes at a time of continuing tensions in the Eastern European region.
This is not the first time that Petr Pavel and Volodymyr Zelensky have met. Previously, the two leaders met at international summits where the Czech Republic repeatedly expressed its support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The visit could thus be an opportunity to deepen bilateral relations and discuss further assistance, whether in the form of humanitarian aid, military assistance or cooperation at the international level in enforcing sanctions against Russia.
According to political analysts, the meeting may also signal the Czech Republic's continued commitment to supporting Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The programme of the visit has not yet been officially published, but it can be expected that, in addition to the official reception at Prague Castle, there will be closed-door talks or a joint press conference where the two presidents will summarise the results of their meeting. Zelensky's visit could also include other activities, such as meetings with leading Czech politicians or visits to memorial sites, which are a normal part of state visits.
This event comes at a time when Ukraine is facing continued Russian aggression and is seeking further support from its allies in Europe. Since the conflict began in 2022, the Czech Republic has become one of Ukraine's key supporters, whether through the supply of military equipment, financial assistance or hosting Ukrainian refugees. The meeting between Pavel and Zelensky may thus be another step towards strengthening Czech-Ukrainian relations and confirming the Czech role in European support for Ukraine.
